Dr. Kins Varghese replied to Carol Ellison's discussion The Extraordinary Collapse of Jatropha as a Global Biofuel
"Hi Carol,I agree with the views to some extent. However , please note that Jatropha was given this mileage without conducting proper research and validation of the climatic and fertiliser requirement over an extended period of time. In Asia,…"

The Extraordinary Collapse of Jatropha as a Global Biofuel

I thought I would share with you this Viewpoint, recently published in Environmental Science & Technology. Do Jatropha growers out there agree with this worrying conclusion? Carol Ellison Kant%20and%20Wu%202011%20Collapse%20of%20Jatropha.pdfSee More

MURENZI replied to Carol Ellison's discussion Is jatropha really the 'miracle' biofuel crop that some profess it to be?
"Hi Carol,I would like to emphasize some of your points of view: Poor yield on poor soil is evident, based on our reseachs about the suitability of the plant throught out the country,It has been observed to grow and develop well on fertile and watered…"

Carol Ellison replied to MURENZI's discussion LOOK FRIENDS!! HAVE YOU SEEN THESE SYMPTOMS ON YOUR JATROPHA PLANTATION
"Hi Murenzi, it looks to me like you have a powdery mildew fungal infection on the leaves and fruit.  Although I don’t know what is causing the fruit ‘bleeding’, possibly insect damage.  The black spots you mention, are…"

"Hi Ala, Could you provide more information about the symptoms (ie when did they start, how old are the plants, where are they being grown, where do the symptoms first appear etc). Is there any evidence of insect borers? Is this a progressive decline…"

Carol Ellison replied to Nellie Kamau's discussion Jatropha
"Hi Nellie, The origin of Jatropha cucas is not yet agreed by scientists, although most think it is Mexico or Central America. It is recorded to have been grown in Africa in the early 1800's and Asia as early as the 1750's. The Portuguese…"

What’s in the News: June 2009 - By Peter Baker

There have been a spate of reports recently concerning jatropha (Jatropha curcas) that are not entirely encouraging for those promoting it as an economically and environmentally sustainable biofuel.

Jatropha’s main selling point is that it need not compete with food crops because it yields well on marginal land. But a review of the published literature using CABI Abstracts (see above Abstracts tab), suggests that there are no good independent studies that actually show this.… Continue
